You hear it happens, but you never think it could happen to your child.
For a couple of months in 2018, Will had been losing weight. He was trying to, so no one thought much of it. His parents noticed his abdomen protruding. They took him to the doctor Thursday November 29 and afterward- a CT scan confirmed a large mass in his abdomen. They immediately went to Lutheran General Hospital. On Friday November 30, Will had a biopsy done. It confirmed their most horrific fear. Cancer. A plan was set in place which included getting chemo and radiation.
Will was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma called Desmoplastic small round cell tumor DSRCT. He had two abdominal tumors, but also had some in his mandible, shoulder and lower back bones.
He went through rounds of chemo and radiation and the tumors were surgically removed. Many trips to NYC Memorial Sloan Kettering and Lutheran General and many more rounds of chemo came next. Through it all he remained strong and always concerned about everyone else. He was a superhero and a true hero to many.
After fighting so incredibly hard for 3 1/2 years, Will’s body just couldn’t handle anymore. Surrounded by those who loved him the most, he passed away on Friday March 25, 2022.
Will was such a strong young man. He went through so much in his short life. He was always thinking of others, even creating a you tube channel to dialogue his journey with cancer. The night he passed, he went quickly, knowing that’s all his family could endure. He leaves a legacy of strength and heroism and love. Will is missed every second of everyday by many who love him and always will.
Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCTs, sometimes also referred to as small blue round cell tumor) are a type of sarcoma that usually develops in the belly or pelvis. They are most often found in white teenagers and young men between age 10 and 30. DSRCTs may cause pain or a mass in the belly. They are very rare, affecting only about 20 young people in the United States each year.
All net proceeds will be going directly to Dr. Emily Slotkin’s research towards DRCT at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
This is where Will received an astounding level of care for this rare and aggressive form of pediatric soft tissue cancer. Due to its rare nature- funds are needed for continued progress in treatments and research to find a cure.
